The Manchester Carriage & Tramway Company commenced operation of the first Manchester route on the 17th May 1877, the system progressively being extended to over 143 miles to Eccles in the west, Crumpsall in the north, Stalybridge in the east and Stockport in the south. 515 tramcars were required to operate the services, which needed 5,520 horses as they only worked for two to three hours at a time. Between 1901 and 1949 Manchester Corporation Tramways (known as Manchester Corporation Transport Department from 1929 onwards) was the municipal operator of electric tram services in Manchester, England. At its peak in 1928, the organisation carried 328 million passengers on 953 trams, via 46 routes, along 292 miles (470 km) of track.
